STASH – a simple Pattern for a Stash Busting Neck Warmer

(Photo shows 3 Versions – Sock Stash, Hand Spun Stash and DK Stash)
Have you got too many single balls of yarn and don’t know what to do with them? Here’s a great way to use them up.
Stash is a simple pattern made up of Edge Stitches and the Ridge Stitch Pattern. The closure is up to you. Why not use a favourite brooch to fasten it around your neck?
Please Note - Gauge is not so important but I used a needle size 1 or 2 sizes less than the recommended to give a nice firm fabric. The approx final measurements are 148cm/19inches long and 12cm/4.6 inches wide. (The ridge stitch is mentioned in the Readers Digest Sewing and Knitting Book)
Abbreviations:-
K = Knit P = Purl K2tog = Knit 2 together K f & b = Knit into front & back of stitch S1kw = Slip 1 knit wise
Here’s the Ridge Stitch Pattern (multiples of 2)
Row 1 – Knit
Row 2 – K2tog to end
Row 3 – Kf & b to end
Row 4 – Purl
Here’s the Edge Pattern (over 2 stitches)
Row 1 S1kw, P1 (work Row 1 of Ridge Pattern to final 2 stitches), P1, S1kw
Row 2 P2, (work Row 2 of Ridge Pattern to final 2 stitches), P2
The Basic Stash Pattern using DK yarn follows.
1 x 50gm DK weight/8 ply yarn (minimum 95m length) and 1 x 3.75mm knitting needles
EDGES – Cast on 34 stitches using long tail cast on (I find this gives the best cast on for this pattern)
Next row (WS) – P2, K30, P2
Then the pattern for the length of the Neck Warmer
Row 1(RS) – S1kw, P1, K30, P1, S1kw
Row 2(WS) – P2, K2tog across row to last 2 stitches, P2
Row 3(RS) – S1kw, P1, Kf & B across row to last 2 stitches, P1, S1kw
Row 4(WS) – Purl
Repeat Row 1 to 4 till required length.
FINAL EDGE ROWS
(WS) – S1kw, P32, S1kw
Cast off all stitches evenly.
Block lightly and weave ends in.
I used my shawl pin to attach edges together when wrapped around my neck.

This version used 1 skein of Koigu KPPM with 250yds, held double throughout. Cast on 28stitches and use a 5mm needles.
This gives a beautiful dense feel to the Stash Scarf. Simply sew on a button (adjusted to your neck circumference) and make a long icord tail with a tassel attached.
I think the ‘wrong’ side of this Stash is as nice as the ‘right’ side.

This version used 1 skein of my own hand spun yarn that had approx 83m/91yards in length (it was a little thicker than a normal 8ply/DK weight yarn).
I cast on 26 stitches with 4.5mm needles and knit till I ran out of yarn. It’s a little longer than the DK stash.
I used an antique brooch to attach the Stash around my neck. The edges look lovely when folded down slightly down at the top of the scarf.
