A recipe for a Magic sock

26 09 2009

I’ve always thought that the simplest pattern is made better by the right choice of yarn. A few of my Mojo Socks had been knit in Zauberball so I ordered some of my own. It is SO soft and the colours were screaming for something simple and fun.

I made up a pattern as I went along – well – not really a pattern as such, just a few different ideas here and there that I thought would show off the yarn to its best. A few people from Ravelry contacted me and asked for the pattern….and so, I scribbled down my ‘recipe’ for my “Fishy” Zauberball socks.

To keep the colours running all the way through so I chose to do an afterthought heel. I was a little disappointed at the lack of red in the blue heeled sock so decided to purposely make the second sock the opposite in colour.

Zauberball socks

1. fishy, 2. fishy, 3. fish, 4. fishy

Feel free to utilize these very simple steps to make your own Zauber (magic) socks. This is a bare outline of what worked for me when I knit with the yarn. It assumes you can knit a basic sock. Feel free to change any aspect for your own version.

(Please don’t use this pattern for any commercial use – just enjoy it for yourself)

‘RECIPE’ FOR A PAIR OF ZAUBER/(MAGIC) SOCKS

Ingredients

1 x ball of Scholle-Wolle Zauberball in no 1564  ”Tropical Fish” colourway

1 x set of 2.5m knit picks circulars 80cm in length

I used the Magic Loop method to knit these socks. I used the afterthought heel in these socks also as I really wanted to have a nice continuance of the colours. The Yarn Harlot has a great explanation for this if you haven’t done one before.

Fishy zauberball afterthought heel

Method

  • Cast on 72 stitches loosely and join to knit in the round
  • Knit in 4 x 4 rib for approx 16cm (my preference)
  • Switch to plain knit stitch for approx 1cm
  • Add yarn for afterthought heel (check links for how to do this)
  • Continue to knit foot of sock to your required length and then decrease to toes
  • Decrease and finish sock
  • Weave in ends
  • Repeat for the second sock (don’t match the colours/stripes – I dare you)
  • Put them on and dance around with your new funky socks.
  • Enjoy!

Did you have any issues with these socks “growing” once they hit water? My only friend who has knit with the Zauberball knit for her size US 8 feet and gave them to her US 11-sized sister after they were washed. These socks are awesome, and I’ve been drooling over Zauberballs. Too bad I’m prohibited from buying more sock yarn for a while! :-)
