How many more sleeps

to go to Bendigo?

I am busy dyeing yarn that I have had a WHOLE year to dye….nothing like working to a deadline.

Here’s just some of the stuff…

Bendigo Bits

I am just loving the semi-solids coming out of my pot. I really enjoy the whole process and really should keep it up more. There’s lots of baby alpaca, there’s some 4 ply sock yarns, there’s even some lace-weight. There’s lots of colours that I can’t repeat as they presented themselves to me. Just enjoying it all so much.

I have a question. I was thinking of winding the sock yarn into lovely yarn cakes, for 2 reasons. 1 being point of difference, and 2 being ease of use – cast on straight away.

Thoughts please?

  1. By the time the yarn gets to Bendi, it might need to be re-caked. Unless of course you wind them on the spot…
(Here’s me, jealous of everyone going to Bendi even though there are fab fibre festivals here!)

  2. Gorgeous colors & I do agree with some that half/half will be a good idea. Yarn in skein is a great selling strategy as buyers can squeeze & feel.

  3. Well I won’t be there, but I think some of each: skeins for looking at and fondling and cakes for taking home to start knitting immediately.
I think I may have read a post almost exactly the same as this one a year ago?? Some people just work best under pressure. I think you plan in your mind so you are doubly prepared for the final onslaught. Lovely colours!!!

  4. What they said.

And can you save me a cake of sock yarn in Sir Walter? I suddenly find myself hankering for green socks.

    See ya real soon!

  5. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm look at all that yarny goodness…are you sure you don’t just want to give it all to me??

As for cakes, I think what everyone has said makes sense. I know some people (yarn connosseurs I guess you’d call them) prefer not to wind into cakes until absolutely ready to use – eg some people won’t pay as much for yarn already wound as they would if it was still on the skein. It can stretch the yarn a bit apparently (being wound into cakes and stored that way). But seriously, it can’t make that much difference can it!

So yeah, half and half I say! Unless you want to take your swift and ballwinder with you …

  6. scrummy colours! and exactly what everyone else said!

  7. ooh, can’t wait to see you at the Show! I’ve still got my skeins of Sir Walter baby alpaca from last year, waiting for the *right* project!

for what it’s worth, too – I love yarn cakes, but skeins can be easier for transport if you have bought..ahem…a lot of yarn at Bendigo!!!!

not that I’d know from experience, or anything!

  8. Those are so beautiful. I like the way yarn looks and feels in skeins. Just looking at that picture makes me want to buy all of it.

  9. I’m with the others. Skeins are smooshy whereas cakes tend to not be. But for easy-peasiness you can’t beat a already wound cake.

    Have heaps of fun!

  10. Agree on previous comments – I like being able to see the colours in the skein but not having my own swift/winder a yarn cake means instant cast on gratification.
Hope you have a fabulous time with lots of good sales!

  11. Do half and half – some will love to cake the yarn themselves – and hanks are easier to transport, and others will love the instant gratification of the yarn cake ready to go. Also, having both will give people a good idea of the colour variations…

  12. I agree that a bit of both would be good as I like to see how the colours present themselves both in a skein and wound into a ball as it gives me more of an idea as to how it will knit up.

  13. Wound into yarn cakes would make a huge difference to me as I have neither a swift or a winder and do it all manually which means hanging the skein over the back of a chair or my husbands hands and winding by hand. So if I had to chose between your goods and someone else with similar stock yours would win hands down if ready to go. Keeping a few unwound so the colours would be appreciated might work too though. It would be a balance.

What ply is the baby alpaccy??? I have a weakness…
