I’ve always liked the Kyoto myself, but didn’t think it would look right on me. Maybe we should each make one, and send it to the other!

Go for the Alpine Lace. Advanced Schmadvanced. It’s knitting, you’re a Knitter, and if you can do Bayeriche, you can do this. Besides, it’s Alpine, which evokes snow covered mountains, which is right up your alley, non?

I often wrestle with the same concerns about fit and flattering styles for particular figures… sometimes a project just has to be made to see whether or not it looks alright or completely crap! But that’s why we’re not all out shopping for pret-a-porter knits isn’t it!
If I made Kyoto, I would not make that centre panel such a different colour.
I have made a little bolero top similar to the one you’re contemplating and it has made one dress in particular (a sleeveless one – in addition to arm curtains I have a tatt I don’t want the world to know about) eminently more wearable. I actually got a compliment on it from my SIL which is big news.
So I saw follow your instincts and if it doesn’t work out you can always frog it or give it to someone it will suit better!

Speaking as a “larger proportioned” person who has already knit a Kyoto, may I offer some thoughts on the fit of said garment.
If you carry your excess weight around your middle (spare tyres), then the sash part of the Kyoto will tend to hug these tyres and accentuate them a little (ask me how I know this!). The other concern is the arm holes, which unless you seam them really loosely, do not have a lot of elasticity, which can mean a slightly over-snug fit if your upper arms are generous.
If you carry your weight on your bum and thighs, however, then the Kyoto is probably a good bet.

ha!! When I saw the horizontally-stretched image I thought “yuk!” Then I thought, “oh the pattern is ok, but Donni’s stretched it accidentally and it looks yuk.” Then I thought “ha, that’s how it would look on me!”. Then I read the post . I’m hoping that the 50 rounds of 576 stitches I’m currently working in my pi shawl will make me-sized garments seem less challenging for next winter.

Can I be honest? I don’t think you should make Kyoto. I think you are not sure enough about it – at least wait a while. Do an interim project.

Hey, I often refer to myself as a ten tonne tessie, particularly when I’m suffering with PMT. Either that or a heiffer.

You can totally knit the Alpine Lace – heck, if I’m doing it you can!! I think it’s only advanced because it is patterned on the purl rows as well! Do it, do it, do it!!
