Destination - Knitting Limbo

You know how it is when you finish a ‘big’ project or one that has occupied you for a while?
That’s kind of how I am feeling at the moment.
I have cast on for a Knitted Babe for my niece who turns 7 on the weekend. She’s have a “fashion party” at a Napoleon Perdis Beauty Salon with 10 of her closest friends. Kaela is BESIDE herself with excitement as the night promises ‘a make-over, manicure with nail polish, pizza and a fashion parade at the end of the night’. (Hrmph. Can’t remember ever having one of THOSE parties when I was a kid. It was all about “Pass the Parcel” and whacking the bejesus out of a pinata strung up on the Fig tree out the front, then a run through the Sprinkler. - ahhhh - those were the ‘good old days’).
Anyways. I promised a Knitted Babe so I am DOING a Knitted Babe. (Don’t you hate it when you hear those words “I’ll make you one” and as soon as you say that the project takes on a grudge and berates you all the time to a: start it and/or b: finish it.
So.
I have finally settled on yarn for my Kyoto. I want to start straight away. BUT.
I am not slim.
So?
Well. Not being slim limits a lot of my projects because I knit stuff to wear myself. You know what I mean? I knit to wear stuff and cause I am not slim things are NEVER going to look as good. I have an honest eye of myself and whilst I know that I am not Humungous, I do know that I am overweight and certain things will not look attractive on me. And I am not able to wear stuff when I know I will look like a ten tonne tessie. I envy people that wear t-shirts and don’t care that they have spare tyres kicking around their waist . I wish I was of the ilk that I could wear sleeveless ANYTHING - and not worry about my arm curtains flapping around in the wind for all to see. But I’m not. So I am aware of what I knit and if it will make me look bigger. (PS - I altered the photo - do not adjust your sets).
So as much as I love Kyoto I want to make sure that I will look reasonable in it. And I can’t fathom why I have just spent all of winter knitting up the smallest projects imaginable (socks) and am looking at knitting a garment coming into summer. Hmm.
I am also suffering Post Project Senses Overload. Ohh - look at that - I want to knit Lace. This actually. But it says ‘advanced lace’. Hmmmm. These? Yeah So many choices. What about these socks? Yeah - but no - no more socks at the moment. Don’t know where to start.
Deep Breath.
Breathe in.
Breath out.
Can you tell I am sleep deprived and have PMT?
I think this Pattern is the way to go. What do you think?

Is Cute non? And I think I could even buy sleeveless dresses and wear this over the top. But then again…that might be taking it a little too far. Heh heh.

Oh I haven’t heard Ten Tonne Tessie for years!!! It brings back memories of my sister and I hurling said words at each other when we argued!!! I am not making anymore Winter things, I have to knit something for the warmer weather too!!! I like the Summer Sky little cardigan. But I will not be knitting the backless dress, so you can stop screaming and being afraid I might burn your retinas!!! Hope you get some sleep soon!!

You can totally knit the Alpine Lace - heck, if I’m doing it you can!! I think it’s only advanced because it is patterned on the purl rows as well! Do it, do it, do it!!

Yeah! Do it! The alpine lace will be just fine.
Can I be honest? I don’t think you should make Kyoto. I think you are not sure enough about it - at least wait a while. Do an interim project.
Hey, I often refer to myself as a ten tonne tessie, particularly when I’m suffering with PMT. Either that or a heiffer.

ha!! When I saw the horizontally-stretched image I thought “yuk!” Then I thought, “oh the pattern is ok, but Donni’s stretched it accidentally and it looks yuk.” Then I thought “ha, that’s how it would look on me!”. Then I read the post :-). I’m hoping that the 50 rounds of 576 stitches I’m currently working in my pi shawl will make me-sized garments seem less challenging for next winter.

Speaking as a “larger proportioned” person who has already knit a Kyoto, may I offer some thoughts on the fit of said garment.
If you carry your excess weight around your middle (spare tyres), then the sash part of the Kyoto will tend to hug these tyres and accentuate them a little (ask me how I know this!). The other concern is the arm holes, which unless you seam them really loosely, do not have a lot of elasticity, which can mean a slightly over-snug fit if your upper arms are generous.
If you carry your weight on your bum and thighs, however, then the Kyoto is probably a good bet.

oh! and the bolero is pretty cute, although the negative ease idea freaks me out a bit.

Yep. The cropped cardi. Definitely.

I often wrestle with the same concerns about fit and flattering styles for particular figures… sometimes a project just has to be made to see whether or not it looks alright or completely crap! But that’s why we’re not all out shopping for pret-a-porter knits isn’t it!
If I made Kyoto, I would not make that centre panel such a different colour.
I have made a little bolero top similar to the one you’re contemplating and it has made one dress in particular (a sleeveless one - in addition to arm curtains I have a tatt I don’t want the world to know about) eminently more wearable. I actually got a compliment on it from my SIL which is big news.
So I saw follow your instincts and if it doesn’t work out you can always frog it or give it to someone it will suit better!

Go for the Alpine Lace. Advanced Schmadvanced. It’s knitting, you’re a Knitter, and if you can do Bayeriche, you can do this. Besides, it’s Alpine, which evokes snow covered mountains, which is right up your alley, non?

Oy, the pressure to have “cool” birthday parties. . .
I’ve always liked the Kyoto myself, but didn’t think it would look right on me. Maybe we should each make one, and send it to the other!

A ‘makeover’ for a seven year old? Like what’s there to make over? Unbelievable.
